6 Workouts that are Getting Me Hot This Summer

I mean, that isn’t going to be hard, because it is hot in Florida more often than it isn’t. But I have a goal of having a healthy body that I want to be happy in this summer and as I prepare for the wedding.

So in today’s blog post, I am going to share workouts that I enjoy and that I am trying to incorporate more of. And it was inspired by a spread in the June/July 2014 issue of Seventeen magazine titled “Get Hot… No Sweat,” which is kind of interesting in that I can’t avoid sweating in Florida, workout or no. The spread shares ten different things to do, but I might just keep it to six, because I think that is my number. The things in quotations are what they recommend, and I have expanded to explain how I have applied it to my own life.

1. “Jog a Fun Run!”

The spread lists this, and I have to say that I do not identify as a runner. What I will say is that my friends are getting into running, and I have agreed to go to running events with them, so indirectly, I am jogging a fun run, because I am happy to run with my friends. Would I run on my own? I don’t think so… on a different note, I am making it a goal to try and hit ten thousand steps every other day, which should count for something. Just not a fun run.

Here is a selfie I took of myself as I was out and about after a workout.

2. “Try Paddleboarding!”

I have actually tried and loved paddleboarding, but I will say that there is definitely more of a cost investment involved in this one. The last time I went was probably the spring break of my second year in college. So while I won’t be doing it on a regular basis, I am going to put it on the summer bucket list this year so that I go at least once before the summer is over.

This is a photo of Damian the Wigglebutt in a doggy life vest.
So the last time I went paddleboarding was after I got Damian, and I took this photo of him in the life vest. I thought I had some of us on the water, but that does not seem to be the case.

3. “Shoot Hoops!”

I actually used to enjoy playing basketball in gym class until everyone shot over me height-wise. I don’t think I’ve played since middle school, so what I will say about that is I am going to try it and see how my body feels about it. No harm, no foul that way, and I don’t have to worry about my competitive streak ruining the fun.

4. Learn How to Play Pickle Ball

Since it got super trendy a few years ago, I have been wanting to learn how to play pickle ball. And I have been fortunate enough to have already checked this one off my list, since my sister met a pickle ball instructor and then asked for us to have a lesson. I’m going to say that it is a pretty social sport, and pretty easy to learn. Easy enough that I tricked the instructor into believing I had an athletic gene in me, which I had never believed myself, so I convinced her without even trying.

5. “Hit the Beach!”

So growing up, I actually didn’t love going to the beach, because I didn’t love getting tan. But I seem to be working towards a tan, now I go to the beach a little more often than I used to. Plus, the walking across the uneven sand is probably a good way of working out different muscles in my legs.

6. Swimming

As a kid, I actually loved going to the pool, especially once I taught myself how to swim. If there was ever space or privacy, I would love to just do laps in the pool. Sadly, the pool in my neighborhood has been packed since the summer started, so I really just get to soak or wait for it to clear out. Or maybe not so sadly, because swimming actually takes a lot out of me. I guess there is no time like this summer to build up my stamina again!

How are you staying active this summer? Do you miss holding magazines the way I do? Are there any activities I should try this summer? Let me know in the comments below!
